JAC Motors started in 1964 as a truck manufacturer and only in the early 2000s diversified into passenger car and light commercial vehicle production. Today, JAC Motors boasts with 57-years of experience manufacturing reliable, high-quality trucks.
Over the last decade, JAC Motors has refined the design and engineering of its popular range of trucks to ensure excellent performance, low running cost and driver safety.
JAC Motors designed and engineered its 3-tonne entry-level truck, the N56-3360, to offer the best urban logistics solutions to transport operators across various industries.
The N56 represents a new approach to transport goods by truck. It is fuel-efficient and reliable, addressing modern-day transportation needs created by the growth in e-commerce over the last year. It also offers the built-in flexibility of a chassis-cab design that allows for specific configuration based on unique transportation needs.
“Our N56 offers the best value for money in its category. It has been designed with the changing needs of small- and medium enterprises in mind and reflects our product values of reliability, functionality and low operating costs,” says Karl-Heinz Göbel, CEO of JAC Motors South Africa.
Reliable powerplant and drivetrain proven in local conditions.
The N56 supports a reliable 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, developing 80 kW at 3 600 r/min and 240 Nm of torque between 1 800 and 2 000 r/min. The powerful Euro 2 engine pairs with an easy-shifting 5-speed manual transmission.
The N56 features an exhaust brake system for maximum braking efficiency. An exhaust brake uses a valve fitted into the exhaust system to create backpressure that retards engine speed, offering extra braking.
A trademark of the trucks is its excellent fuel economy across the range. The N56’s powertrain design ensures that peak torque is delivered at low rpm, reducing the need for frequent gear shifting, resulting in better fuel consumption. Its average sub-urban fuel consumption is 8.5 ℓ/100 km, and average combined-cycle fuel consumption is 10 ℓ/100 km.
“Almost 3-million N56 trucks have been sold globally. Fleet operators are especially impressed with the performance, fuel efficiency and everyday functionality of our rugged 3-tonne truck,” says Göbel.
Robust chassis design for easy loading and manoeuvrability.
The N56 benefits from the new heavy-duty ladder-frame chassis stamping and welding treatment process, making it robust for many different body applications. The main advantage of a rugged but flexible and lightweight chassis frame is the optimum axle weight distribution that enhances safety.
The maximum use of axle capacities for ideal payload weight distribution ensures optimal manoeuvrability in heavy urban traffic and on open roads. The front- and rear leaf-spring suspension provides improved stability and less chassis roll in all load states and on any road surface.
The short wheelbase design and precise steering of the hydraulic assisted power steering make it easy to manoeuvre the N56 in heavy inner-city traffic and on small construction sites. The N56 supports a wheelbase of 3 360 mm, a turning radius of only seven metres and a ground clearance of 190 mm.
The N56 offers a payload of 3 020 kg. Its overall dimensions are 5 995 mm x 1 900 mm x 2 330 mm. With a large load area measuring 4 230 mm x 1 790 mm x 400 mm, the N56 easily deserves the reputation as JAC Motors’ best solution for urban logistics.
The ultra-flat low deck of the N56 offers excellent clearance, making loading and offloading of goods easy. The N56 also features a Load Sensing Proportioning Valve (LSPV) for increased stability.
Protection bars are fitted to the side of the N56 to protect the driver and cargo from accidental damage when manoeuvring in restricted urban areas. It also features an integrated rear step bumper with a tow bar.
Comfortable cab and safety features to deliver cargo on time.
The N56 supports a robust workhorse presence featuring a forward-tilting cab that provides a wide tilt angle for easy access to the engine bay. The ergonomically designed driver-friendly cab offers maximum driver comfort and convenience to increase driver productivity.
The N56 offers an innovative flat floor design for maximum comfort and space for the driver and two passengers. Wider door apertures, footsteps and climbing handles allow for easy entry and exit, which is less tiring for the driver and passengers.
The N56 features a neat, functionally designed truck interior. An adjustable driver seat and wide steering wheel, which is fully rake-and-reach adjustable, make driving pleasurable. Electric windows, air-conditioning and a radio/MP3 player with Bluetooth functionality are standard features to contribute to a productive work environment.
There is ample storage space inside the N56’s cab. There are dashboard storage compartments, storage underneath and behind the seats, and a driver roof storage compartment to conveniently stow away documents and valuables.
Various safety features complement the robust design of the N56. The reinforced cab floor improves driver safety, and the framed double rear-view exterior mirrors provide increased driver visibility. A reverse warning buzzer, headlamp levelling device and a seat-belt reminder are standard equipment for additional driver safety.
The N56 features hydraulic brakes and comes standard with ABS that offers excellent stopping power and driver control, preventing wheel lock-up under emergency braking conditions.
Model line-up and pricing.
The N56 comes standard with a 5-year/150 000-kilometre manufacturer warranty, including a 5-year/60 000-kilometre service plan. Scheduled service intervals are every 10 000 km.

The truck range was recently extended with the global launch of JAC Motors’ new N55 EV 3-tonne electric truck. JAC Motors is a leader in green and energy-saving electric vehicles and has solid partnerships to address future mobility needs.
“We are extremely excited about the upcoming launch of the N55 EV later this year. Together with local- and international product launches, the new N55 will elevate the JAC Motors brand to new heights in South Africa,” adds Göbel.
